Virtual Reality Headsets a Big Hit
Our recent purchase of a VR headset has really had an impact on some of our residents who find it hard to get about at our nursing home in Hamilton. Many of them are able to enjoy virtual walks and trips to places that they used to frequent such as holiday destinations or honeymoons. It is an excellent therapy for our residents who live with dementia or even for those who hanker for places that they thought they would never see again.

For many residents, mobility, health needs or distance can make travel difficult. VR gently removes those barriers. With a headset on, residents can “visit” calming beaches, bustling cities, countryside landscapes or even landmarks from their younger years. This sense of immersion brings powerful emotional benefits. It can spark memories, encourage storytelling, and open warm conversations with staff and fellow residents. Often, residents start chatting about holidays they once took, places they lived, or experiences they loved – turning the session into a shared social moment.
Virtual reality is also incredibly uplifting. The novelty of the technology adds excitement and fun to the day, while the beautiful visuals and soothing environments can help reduce anxiety, lift mood and provide relaxation. For residents living with dementia or for our bed bound residents, familiar scenery and gentle sensory stimulation can be comforting, helping them to feel calm and engaged.
Just as importantly, VR promotes inclusion. Everyone can take part – whether sitting, standing or supported – making it a wonderful equaliser. Staff enjoy being part of the experience too, supporting residents, sharing laughter and celebrating each reaction.
At Lornebank Care Centre in Hamilton, we are not affraid to try new ideas and technologies if it improves our overall nursing care provision and overall quality of life for our residents.
