Purposeful dementia Care
in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire
Who is it for?
We have two dedicated dementia suites at Lornebank Care Centre, Livingston and Peacock, but our philosophy is to mix our residents wherever possible for activities and social events. Residents living with dementia range from those with mild symptoms, right the way through to more advanced forms of memory care with complex needs.
If you are searching for compassionate dementia care in Hamilton, Lornebank Care Centre offers a warm, safe, and stimulating environment where every resident are supported to live and live well. All Lornebank residents living with dementia are entitled to live a fulfilled life with dignity and purpose.
Visit our care home and you will likely find residents undertaking tasks that they have shown an interest in. Whether it’s polishing cutlery, doing a bit of hoovering or planting out in the garden; we keep our residents engaged and focused on tasks that provide them comfort, routine or focus.
Life is an activity: it’s not just bingo!
At Lornebank, we understand that life itself is an activity. While residents enjoy traditional favourites like bingo and crafts, we actively encourage involvement in the home’s daily life to foster a sense of ownership.
Active Participation. You might see residents helping with light housework or joining the “Breakfast Club,” where shared meal preparation often turns into a spontaneous sing-along, proving that the most mundane moments can bring the greatest joy.
Physical Wellbeing. We adapt physical activities to all abilities, from “catching practice” to keep reflexes sharp, to more adventurous sessions out in the garden like Swingball.
Connecting with our shared community & history
We prioritise connection with the local Lanarkshire community, ensuring residents remain active citizens of Hamilton and beyond. We balance safety with quality of living and arrange regular trips that spark conversation and reminiscences.
Reminiscence Trips. Recent excursions to the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life and The Kelpies have proved popular. Local historical exhibits are a great resource and allow residents to reconnect with their pasts, sharing stories of “days gone by” with staff and peers in a way that feels natural and life-affirming.
Social Outings. Whether it is a trip to the local memory café for tea and cake or a visit to the summer fete at neighbouring care homes like Cathkin House, we ensure our residents maintain their social circles outside the home. There is of course joy in simple pleasures like walking to the shops to buy a newspaper.
Therapeutic engagement & sensory support
Our approach to dementia care in Hamilton is rooted in Life Story Work, an approach by which we collaborate with families to better understand a resident’s personal identity, preferences and history. This allows us to engage with residents on a very personal basis that can both soothe and cheer.
Animal Therapy. Our residents have enjoyed interactions with therapy dogs, ponies, and even owls. These encounters provide tactile comfort and often initiate responses from withdrawn residents that are quite surprising. Baillie, our manager’s own dog, is a regular and well-loved visitor to our nursing home and is a trained therapy dog.
Relaxation. For those who prefer a quieter pace, we offer pampering sessions and one-to-one sensory time, utilising touch, our virtual headset and even personalised music playlists to manage distress without reliance on medication.
What is happening in our dementia care suite?
We welcomed two darling therapy dogs, Bracken and Bailey, to Lornebank Care Centre. They brought out some big smiles across the home from both staff and residents and we are already looking forward to their next visit in November.
We enjoyed some flower arranging yesterday. Flower arranging is a feast for the senses; the touch, sight and smell of the flowers is a treat. And they really brighten a room!
Here is the September winner of our monthly raffle, Frances. She takes home a Henry Stick Hoover! Congratulations go to Frances. Our October raffle is a twin air fryer. If you would like to buy tickets speak to Karen or reception who will sort you out.
Dementia Care at our Hamilton Nursing Home
A residence designed for independence
Purpose-Built Layout:
Our nursing home is a purpose-built facility with 74 single en-suite rooms spread across five distinct suites on two floors, including two dedicated dementia suites. This unit-based design can help break down a large facility into smaller, more manageable communities, which is often beneficial for reducing confusion in residents with dementia.
Safety and Accessibility:
En-suite Facilities. Every room features an en-suite walk-in shower.
Secure Environment. The home maintains a safe environment with secure access, allowing residents to move about freely without risk. However, we encourage mixing when there is entertainment that the whole home can enjoy.
Sensory and Homely Atmosphere.
Bright and Fresh. Inspectors and families have described the environment as “bright,” “fresh,” and “clean”. Good lighting and a clean environment are critical for residents with dementia to help with orientation and reduce anxiety.
Personalisation:
Residents are encouraged to personalise their bedrooms with their own belongings and keepsakes. This familiarity is crucial for all our residents, especially those within our dementia care suites, as it helps residents recognise their own space and feel more secure.
Balance of Private and Social Spaces:
Social Hubs. The design includes a spacious reception area, a vibrant and well-used café (complete with a piano) that serves as a social hub and meeting point for residents and families, and as a space where residents can mix over coffee.
Outdoor Access. Our spacious garden area with seating to the rear, allowing residents safe access to fresh air and nature. A lot of activities are held here during warmer months, and again, it is a place where we mix residents from across all our units.
Quiet Areas. The home offers a mix of shared lounges and private spaces, allowing residents to choose between social interaction and quiet reflection depending on their mood.
Lornebank Care Centre is here to help your loved one reconnect to the life they have always lived.
What Conditions Does Memory Care Cover?
Memory care is designed primarily for individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but it encompasses a wider range of neurological conditions and support needs.
Our Hamilton nursing home is equipped to handle a range of conditions and can also provide Nursing Dementia Care in Hamilton (sometimes referred to as EMI), meaning Lornebank can offer 24-hour medical oversight for complex needs, as well as alongside Respite Care for families requiring short-term dementia support
- Alzheimer’s Disease: The most common form, primarily affecting memory and cognitive function.
- Vascular Dementia: Often caused by strokes or reduced blood flow to the brain.
- Mixed Dementia: A combination of two or more types (e.g., Alzheimer's and Vascular).
- Lewy Body Dementia: Can involve hallucinations and movement issues similar to Parkinson's.
- Frontotemporal Dementia: Often affects personality, behavior, and language before memory.
- Memory care also supports conditions that overlap with cognitive decline. This includes Parkinson’s Disease, which requires specialized nursing for mobility and potential cognitive changes, and stroke recovery for those with resulting cognitive impairment.
- Behavioral & Safety Needs Admission is often driven by safety concerns rather than just a diagnosis. Memory care provides a secure environment for residents experiencing wandering, "sundowning" (confusion that worsens at night), or significant difficulty with daily tasks like bathing and eating.
