What we do

Pitkerro Care Centre is a Dundee care home like no other. We are famously energetic and fun-seeking, we celebrate life as a whole home and enjoy the support of many families. Pitkerro offers nursing and dementia care across 5 different suites, including a small dedicated suite for residents with advanced dementia care needs. Our gardens are huge, our staff diverse, and our lounges alive with blether and companionship.

Where we do it

Pitkerro Care Centre is perfectly situated just south of Fintry and Whitfield in the east of Dundee. Its location makes it a popular choice for people seeking nursing care from across Dundee, Broughty Ferry and Monifieth. Frequent buses connect Pitkerro with Dundee city centre.

Adjoining Finlathen Park and the Dighty Burn footpath, the home offers a peaceful residential setting, surrounded by parkland and trees, and with plenty of opportunities for pleasant strolls, whether it’s in our large, secure garden or out in the surrounding parkland. With all that space comes plenty of free parking and a sense of space with the home not overlooked by any other properties. With its close proximity to the A92 and Dundee Kingsway, Pitkerro is easily accessible to the eastern suburbs of Dundee and out into Angus.

Our Ashton suite contains 11 beds and is dedicated to caring for residents living with more advanced forms of dementia. Otherwise residents with less pronounced forms of dementia care can be found throughout the rest of our Dundee nursing home.

Our care home in Dundee provides expert nursing care in Dundee, specializing in complex clinical needs and dementia. We held our monthly BBQ 🍗 a selection of hot dog, beef burgers, pork or chicken, all cooked by our lovely carer Franco under the watchful eye of chef lily and resident Anne. The weather took a change so most of us decided to enjoy our food inside where it was just a little bit warmer, none the less the food didn’t disappoint it was delicious 😋

My mum has been a resident in Pitkerro care home for just over three years. I am writing this on behalf of myself and my dad. This is based on our experiences of regular visits to the home. My dad visits my mum on a daily basis and I visit 5-6 times a week. We have been extremely pleased with the excellent care and support provided by the multi-disciplinary team at Pitkerro to my mum and ourselves. Visitors are made to feel welcome from the minute they walk in the door. The reception area is always a hive of activity, the theme of décor changes on a regular basis, with residents helping to make decorations and dress the area. The gardens are welcoming and well maintained. My mum is in the Ashton Unit, this is a small unit which is homely with a friendly and calm atmosphere. The unit is always clean, tidy and well maintained. Laundry can often by a challenging issue in a care setting, e.g. clothes going missing or shrinking overall this has not been a major issue for my mum. In my opinion the staff are genuinely caring, kind, patient and compassionate. My mum’s care has been tailored to her needs taking into account her personal preferences, the staff have also included us in this process. As my mum’s care needs have changed, the staff have adapted their approached accordingly, such as successfully using distractions to support my mum if she becomes distressed as opposed to using medications. There are always lots of organised activities on offer, such as entertainers, discos, puppet shows to name a few. There is a regular church service and the local nursery also visit. The home work hard to continue to support families and their loved ones to continue to celebrate events such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, mothers/father’s day, Easter, Valentines day etc. There are also themed food events, Chinese, Indian, Scottish etc which families are encouraged to attend. The food is always delicious as are the birthday cakes! The staff have taken time to get to know my mum, they have read her All about me book, they also ask us about my mum’s life. Despite my mum’s advancing dementia they continue to find ways to engage my mum in meaningful activity on a daily basis, such as singing familiar favourite songs, engaging her in conversations about the photos in her room, general chit chat, getting her to help wipe tables etc. When visiting I have observed staff engaging other residents in a range of day to day activities such as helping make cups of tea. These are small actions but provide meaningful connection and occupation. Communication about my mum’s care has been excellent, we are kept up to date with any changes and included in care planning. The leadership team have an open door policy and are always there to listen and support. The team also liaise well with the community care teams and always keep us in the loop regarding discussions. Choosing a care home for a loved one is a daunting task. Both myself and my dad are delighted that we chose Pitkerro. The care provided by the team gives peace of mind that my mum is well looked after in safe and caring hands when we are not there. This is very reassuring for our family. We are grateful to the staff for their hard work, dedication and kindness shown not only to my mum but also to our family.

Always love visiting Pitkerro as such a vibrant yet homely atmosphere full of laughter and fun. New addition to the family here are the duck eggs which they hatched and the residents now help look after. Their new pond is being constructed in the garden.

Our meals

Meal times are when we all come together in each of the dining areas on each floor. We do this between 12-30pm and 13-30pm each day, so please keep visiting at these hours to a minimum. As you can appreciate, it gets pretty busy, and for our residents, it’s an important time.

Chef always likes to use Angus sourced, seasonal fare whenever possible, but meals are always tasty and comforting. We have been known to grow our own herbs, so sometimes the ingredients are very local indeed!

Our chef likes to follow the food and check that residents are happy with the dishes and that all dietary requirements are being met. She also insists on personally delivering each and every birthday cake. Being an ex-carer herself, she values her time with our residents.

In warmer months, we often eat outside on our large BBQ. With a garden as spacious and attractive as ours, it would be rude not to!

Meet our manager

If you are searching for the highest standards of nursing care in Dundee, Pitkerro Care Centre is led by care home manager Lynsey Robbie, a registered general nurse with over 20 years of clinical expertise

Unlike many care homes in Dundee, Lynsey brings extensive experience from the NHS intensive care and medical wards, moving into the private sector to provide the personalised, high-quality care that local families expect.

Lynsey’s leadership is a key reason Pitkerro Care Centre operates at full or nearly full level of occupancy. She is the reason the home stands out so prominently across the Dundee care sector. She is famously hands-on; while other facilities struggle with temporary staffing, Pitkerro maintains near-zero levels of agency staff. This commitment to consistency means residents always see familiar faces. In fact, Lynsey is known to step back into clinical shifts herself to ensure that the standards of nursing care never waver, keeping her well connected to her residents’ daily needs.

For families in Broughty Ferry, Douglas, and the wider Dundee region, Lynsey’s philosophy transforms the traditional view of elderly care. She actively dispels the myth of the “dull” care home by prioritising life stories, varied activities, and a rich quality of life. Whether providing long-term support or sensitive palliative and end-of-life care, Lynsey ensures Pitkerro remains a nurturing, high-standard environment where every resident is known by name and valued as an individual.

FAQs

While many homes encourage prospective families to pop in at their convenience to see the home in its natural state, it is often recommended to avoid meal times (typically 12:30–1:30 pm and 5:00–6:00 pm) to ensure staff are available to guide you and answer your questions. Turning up without appointment may also mean that the manager will be unable to meet with you as she may be in meetings. However, if you wish to speak specifically with the home manager or discuss complex funding/care needs in detail, booking an appointment is advisable.

Yes, Pitkerro Care Centre offers flexible respite care for those requiring short-term recovery after a hospital stay or to provide family caregivers a well-earned break. To ensure residents have sufficient time to settle into the home and benefit from our nursing care and social activities, we typically require a minimum stay of two weeks.

As a popular nursing home in Dundee, our availability for respite fluctuates based on our permanent occupancy. While we strive to accommodate all requests, beds are often confirmed closer to the desired start date. Thanks to our flat management structure, we can often make these placement decisions quickly to support families in urgent need.

Weekly fees for nursing care are determined by the specific level of dependency—assessed as low, medium, or high—alongside your choice of accommodation, such as standard or premium rooms. At Pitkerro, we provide clear, rapid guidance on these costs to help families plan effectively.

While we welcome residents funded by the Local Authority or the NHS, it is important to note that these contributions may not cover the full private rate. In such cases, a “third-party top-up” is required, where the family pays the difference. Because funding thresholds and top-up requirements can be complex, we recommend confirming these figures early. As a transparent nursing home, we are committed to helping you navigate these financial details quickly and without the usual corporate bureaucracy.

Many homes have dedicated dementia (EMI) units, often separated by floor to provide a secure environment for residents who may wander or require specialist support. Our secure suite is Ashton suite but we have many other residents with milder dementia across all our other suites. It is common for us to have vacancies in one area but a waiting list for the our Ashton advanced dementia suite. Currently Pitkerro is operating at a high level of occupancy and places for all our services are limited. This fluctuates on a weekly basis.

Before a resident can move into the home, a pre-admission assessment is essential. Conducted by the Home Manager or a senior nurse, this evaluation ensures that we can safely and effectively meet the individual’s specific physical and cognitive requirements.

At Hudson Healthcare, our flat organisational structure means this process is highly efficient; assessments can be performed at the hospital, over the phone, or in the comfort of the person’s current home. This assessment is a vital step in providing personalised nursing care, as it determines the specific dependency level, which, in turn, establishes the final cost of care. Whether you are seeking long-term support or sensitive palliative care, this rapid response ensures that we can confirm a placement and transition your loved one into our nursing home without unnecessary delays.
